When people think about IT Asset Disposition, they often picture the end result: a laptop collected, a hard drive wiped, a certificate issued. What they don’t see is everything that happens in between: the handovers, the checks, the sign-offs, the documentation trail that turns “we recycled it” into “we can prove exactly what happened to it, and when.”
ITAD sits at an unusual intersection. It’s an environmental service by helping organisations retire, reuse, and recycle technology responsibly, but it’s also, fundamentally, a data security service. Every laptop, server, or hard drive that comes through our doors could still hold sensitive information. Getting that wrong isn’t a minor slip; it’s a data breach.
We believe in transparency and therefore have released a short series of short videos featuring KOcyclers – the ones on the ground, doing the checks, running the erasures, signing off the paperwork. Some of them, we’ll admit, are far more comfortable behind a screen than in front of a camera. They stepped up anyway, because this is a story worth telling properly, and it’s their story to tell.
Each video focuses on one part of the security process:
1. Chain of Custody. From the moment a device leaves your building to the moment it’s processed, we track exactly who handled it, where it went, and when. No gaps, no guesswork – just a complete, auditable trail, in line with GDPR and WEEE regulations.
2. Audit Trail – Goods In, Accessioning, and Documentation. Every device that arrives at KOcycle is checked in, assessed, and logged before anything else happens. Nothing moves without a record. It’s the difference between recycling as a rough process and recycling as an accountable one.
3. Data Erasure – Blancco Gold Partner Standard. As a Blancco Gold Partner, we erase every device to certified standards, with a tamper-proof, GDPR-compliant report generated for each one.
None of this happens by accident, and none of it happens without independent scrutiny. KOcycle’s processes are built around recognised frameworks including ISO 27001 (information security management), ISO 14001 (environmental management), ADISA, Cyber Essentials, UK GDPR and WEEE regulations. Alongside this KOcycle is a certified B Corp. These aren’t badges we display and forget about; they shape how every device, every day, moves through our operation.
If you’re evaluating an ITAD partner, our honest advice is this – don’t just ask whether a provider is secure. Ask them to show you how. Ask about chain of custody. Ask how goods are accessioned. Ask what erasure standard they hold, and whether they can produce a report for every single device, not just a sample.
